Carpet Cleaning Silk and Seagrass Carpets

When it comes to carpeting your home or office it’s really important that you choose the correct type of carpet to lay.  I know this only too well from running a business carpet cleaning in London for nearly 10 years.  Choose the wrong one and you can have big problems with maintaining it.  This has become an increasingly big problems as people choose more unusual types of carpets for their homes and sometimes even office.  When I talk about maintaining a carpet I mean the ability to clean it, remove stains and generally keep it looking neat and tidy.

One of the most basic issues in this discussion is the colour of the carpet.  Over the years there has been a big increase in people fitting beige, and sometime nearly white, coloured carpets in their properties.  I can understand why they do this.  A light coloured carpet makes the property look bigger and brighter.  This is particularly appealing if you’re trying to sell or rent out a property.  It’s all about perception.

Unfortunately light coloured carpets are not very practical in shared house, students for example, and for those with young families.  In these scenarios you tend to get a lot of spillages and accidents.   When this happens people don’t alway think of calling for a carpet cleaner and tend to choose to have a go themselves.  To help you choose a reliable company see this post.  This usually involves the use of inappropriate spotters from the supermarket and can make things worse.   So the moral of the story is choose a carpet colour that suits who’s living in a property.  It will extend the life of it and reduce the amount of time and effort you need to maintain it.

Another important issue is to choose a carpet type that is cleanable.  As much as a part silk, or bamboo based rug or carpet looks great there is a big issue when it comes down to carpet cleaning.  Buying a rug that is only dry cleanable means you have issues when it comes to dealing with the kids spilling some food or being sick on it.  Quite often you simply won’t be able to get rid of the stain.  Recently I saw a heavily stained wool and silk rug which had been placed under the family dining table.  The family had young kids and it wasn’t long before this rug was beyond cleaning.

Another carpet type that I see often throughout London is seagrass type flooring.  This stuff is remarkably durable and will last for many years more than many wool or synthetic type surfaces.  However, as London carpet cleaners will agree on, they are terrible to clean.  Using water on such surfaces will lead to issues of shrinkage and water marks.  The other available carpet cleaning methods are often not able to remove problem stain and general traffic lane problems.  Again I have seen people put this flooring in dining rooms and living room where kids play and eat.

This leads us back to what type of carpet should you use.  I’d normally suggest either wool, a wool and synthetic mix, or a simply synthetic carpets.  While we could discuss the merits of each for a long time it usually comes down to cost.  Wool carpets cost significantly more but will last for a lot longer.  They will respond well to cleaning and will look good years after cheaper carpets will have needed replace.

We have years of experience cleaning all manner of carpets in the London area.  We have cleaned them all using a variety of different techniques from standard Hot Water Extraction, or steam cleaning, to completely dry methods.  We have remove stains from all manner of carpets and rugs, again using a multitude of different chemicals and spotters.  These days we do all this using green cleaning methods and solutions.   So, for carpet cleaning London, give us a call today on 0203 598 6188.

Carpet Cleaning Chelsea – Avoid Costly Carpet Cleaning Mistakes

In the days of less sophisticated machinery and harsh chemicals the over wetting of carpets was far more common than it is today.  A lack of professionalism and customers who rented machines to do it themselves were some of the reasons.  Today we have far more powerful machines and more effective cleaning solutions.

Despite this we still see a surprising amount of customers coming to us, in Chelsea and surrounding London boroughs, to deal with problems caused by over-wetting carpets.  The reasons for this include untrained and inexperienced carpet cleaners to the use of the wrong techniques.  We recommend using well trained, experienced people for your carpet cleaning Chelsea needs.  Apart from the inconvenience of long drying times, causing numerous problems to you and your family, why else is this a problem?

Carpet Cleaning Shrinking Carpet

Your carpet can shrink for a variety of reason but the main cause is too much water being left in them when they’re cleaned.  Your carpet cleaner may be applying too much cleaning solution, allowing it to penetrate the base of the carpet, or they may be using a machine which doesn’t have the power to extract the excess water.  The outcome is that as the carpet dries it shrinks.

If the carpet shrinks a little it may be held in place by the fixings at the edge of your carpet and won’t represent a major issue.  However, any significant shrinkage may require the carpet to be professionally re-stretched or replaced. By hiring an established, experienced carpet cleaning Chelsea operator you’ll significantly reduce the risks of carpet shrinkage.

Another significant cause of problems is carpet cleaners using the incorrect method of cleaning.  Some carpets should not be cleaned using traditional hot water extraction methods.  They should be cleaned using a low moisture approach or even dry cleaned.  An experienced operator will be able to identify carpet type and choose the correct method.

Smelly Carpet – Common Odour Problems

A carpet cleaned incorrectly and left over-wet for a long period of time will often develop a musty type smell that is caused by bacteria developing with the carpet fibers.  This smell is not pleasant and is totally avoidable.  A carpet cleaner following the correct procedure will ensure this does not happen.

In addition to using the correct procedure and the best machinery available it is also important to allow a flow of air through your property.  This helps dry the carpet quickly before any musty smells can develop.

Customers often ask if they should close the windows and turn the heating up in a belief that this will help drying.  It will certainly not.  This will create moisture in the property and often causing problems such as outlined earlier.  So remember to open windows and doors if possible both during and after the cleaning process.  Using an experienced operator will help avoid this problem.  If you hire a machine and do it yourself make sure you are aware of the risks. These are avoidable problems.

Browning Caused by Carpet Cleaning

When people talk about browning problems they are referring to the brown spots that can appear out of nowhere after you’ve cleaned your carpet.  It is a problem particularly with wool carpets and jute backed carpets.

Again these problems tend to happen when customers do it themselves or use poor professional carpet cleaners.  A good technician will ensure that they get the chemical balance correct when they clean your carpets to avoid browning.  This involves neutralising the chemicals used in the cleaning process and ensuring that carpets are dried quickly and aren’t over-wet in the first place.

Next time your carpets need cleaned think about the potential problems of doing it yourself or using cheap, untrained operators to do it.  The problems which can arise can cause lots of stress and can be very costly to fix.  Do your research before hiring a company.  Ask them questions about what experience they have, what they’ll do to avoid the above problems.  If you’re in the Chelsea area of London give us a call today.  For office carpet cleaning in Chelsea check this post out.

Carpet Cleaning Chelsea – Cleaning Filthy Carpets

The above photo looks over the Thames towards Chelsea.  It was taken during a break from cleaning carpets in a large two bedroom property in the newly built riverside apartments.  The carpets were standard cut pile ones which were looking in a bad way after the tenants had moved out.  To find out more about carpet cleaning Chelsea read on.

The standard approach is to use steam cleaning on domestic carpets but when they’re in a real bad way you’ve got to change your approach.  In this case we used what you call a contra rotating brush on them.  These brushes, which we often use on office carpets, can often transform carpets which look to be finished.  The lift the pile and also get the cleaning solution into the base of the carpet.  The aggitation created by the tough brushes loosens dirt which has become ingrained over the months and years.  When you then go over the carpet with the tradition hot water extraction, commonly called steam cleaning, you get fantastic results.

The use of two methods of cleaning may appear to be a time consuming exercise but it’s actually the opposite.  While the time taken to set things up is increased it significantly reduces the latter stages of the process.
